Couple evicted from council home
A couple have been evicted from a council house in Ashfield following a number of complaints.
Allegations of drug use were among the issues raised over the property in Sutton, according to Ashfield District Council.
A sword, machete and class A drugs were found during a search of the home in Collins Avenue.
A number of sanctions were used in order to get the couple to adhere to the terms of their tenancy agreement.
This included a Partial Closure Order, a Community Protection Warning, a Community Protection Notice and Fixed Penalty Notice for waste and dog fouling.
The council then took court action and magistrates granted the authority a 14 day Possession Order.
When the keys were not handed back, a Bailiffs Warrant came into effect in early June and the property is now back in the hands of the authority.
John Wilmott, executive lead for community safety and crime reduction, said: “We will not accept anti-social or criminal behaviour from council tenants.
“It has a miserable effect on the lives of their neighbours and surrounding community, and as this case illustrates, we will work with our partners at Nottinghamshire Police to take robust action.”
Heat health alert issued as temperatures to soar
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heat health alert covering the East Midlands.
The alert is now in effect until 6pm on 22 June as temperatures are set to hit 30C in certain areas, including Ashfield.
The alert states “significant impacts are possible across the health and social care services due to the high temperatures”.
This includes an increased demand for health services, excess deaths in people aged over 65 or with health conditions and the ability of the worforce to deliver services.
The Met Office predicts temperatures will rise to 28C (82F) today, rising to 29C (84) on Friday and highs of 30C (86F) on Saturday, before they fall into the mid 20s from Sunday onwards.
Fresh appeal after 1990 murder probe breakthrough
Police investigating the murder of a dad in 1990 have issued a fresh appeal for information after making a breakthrough in the case.
Officers have been speaking to potential witnesses recently in Mansfield as part of the investigation into the death of former miner Kevin Childerley.
Mr Childerley was 30 when he was attacked while asleep with his wife Denise in Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, in the early hours of 19 February 1990.
Mr Childreley was pronounced dead at the scene and Denise was seriously injured but survived.
Their two young children were also asleep in the home at the time of the attack.
Following developments in the case a 62-year-old woman was arrested at the end of April on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in connection with the incident.
She was interviewed by detectives and bailed pending further investigations.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a savage attack which took the life of a much-loved father and left his wife with lifelong injuries.
“Throughout our investigations we have been determined to get justice for both victims in this case, as well as for their two children and the grandchildren who never got to meet their grandad.
“Kevin was a much-loved family man described as a ‘joker’ with a great sense of humour by those who knew him.
“The attack tore apart the family and robbed Kevin’s children of a lifetime of memories.
“The case has never been closed and a dedicated team of detectives has been reinvestigating what happened that night using the latest investigative tools and technology.
“Following recent developments we have visited the neighbourhood to engage with a number of people we believe could help with our inquiries.
“It was a very positive exercise and I’d like to thank people for their cooperation.
“The arrest is also an important development and we have shared the news with Denise and other family members.
“We know the answer to Kevin’s murder lies within the community and we also believe allegiances and loyalties will have changed after the passing of more than three decades.
“I’d continue to encourage anyone with any information, no matter how small, to please continue to get in touch with our officers or anonymously through Crimestoppers.”
Cancer support centre opens
People affected by cancer gathered in Newark this week to celebrate the official opening of the UK’s first Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre based in a community setting.
The pioneering centre, developed in partnership between Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, has opened at the YMCA Newark and Sherwood Community and Activity Village on Lord Hawke Way.
Unlike traditional hospital-based services, this is the first Macmillan support centre to be located within the heart of the community, offering easier access to vital support for people living with or affected by cancer.
The centre was officially opened on Tuesday 10 June 2025 by Andrea Ellis, a local service user, who was joined at the ribbon-cutting ceremony by Macmillan Cancer Support Chief Executive, Gemma Peters, alongside representatives from Sherwood Forest Hospitals and the YMCA.
The centre provides free, drop-in information and personalised support from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4pm. In addition to one-to-one advice, it also offers a growing calendar of activities including walking groups, craft sessions, Look Good Feel Better workshops, and support groups for carers and families affected by cancer.
The team can be contacted on 01636 681681 ext. 5936, mobile 07553 726425, or by email at sfh-tr.cancer.info@nhs.net. For additional support, the Macmillan Support Line is available seven days a week from 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 00 00. More information can also be found at macmillan.org.uk.
