Facelift plan for former Wilko store
A former town centre Wilko which will be turned into a college building is set to get an external facelift.
Plans have been put forward to replace the concrete front of the shop in Outram Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, with a new timber frame.
Documents submitted to Ashfield District Council show a secondary entrance to the site will be removed and replaced with a wall.
Vision West Nottinghamshire College (VWNC) took over the site last year with plans to turn it into a construction school for 16 to 18-year-olds.
Under plans approved by the council, it will include classrooms, workshops, offices and a canteen.
In the new plans, the college says it wants to make the front and rear of the building “more fitting to a construction-related education space”.
A spokesperson for the college added: “The proposal includes both the removal of the dilapidated, unsafe concrete cladding from the front elevation and the rotten timber canopy which sits below the cladding.
“The concrete cladding is to be replaced with a sustainable, aesthetic timber cladded system which will inject a new lease of life to the front elevation of the building.
“We believe that the modern cladding system finds a great balance in showcasing a new system, whilst also keeping in touch with the colour palette of its surroundings.
“We also believe that the the cladding system will attract students that may not have considered VWNC prior.”
A decision is expected on the proposal by May 25.
