We love you so much, Harley. Fly high until we meet again.”

Sports disability champion recognised

A leading advocate for disability sport has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Pete Edwards, chair of the Ashfield Health and Wellbeing Partnership, has been awarded an MBE for his outstanding contribution to sport and the local community.

The 70-year-old, who also sits on the Discover Ashfield Board, has spent years championing opportunities for people with disabilities in sport across the district.

Pete said he was “gobsmacked” when he received the letter from the Cabinet Office.

“It’s such an honour and I’m extremely humbled and proud to be nominated for this accolade,” he said.

Originally from South Yorkshire, Pete overcame a childhood hip condition and later rebuilt his life after losing his leg in a mining accident in 1989.

He moved to Ashfield shortly after and became a passionate advocate for disabled sport, excelling in amputee football, swimming, and wheelchair basketball.

Pete later became a swimming coach, supporting countless disabled athletes to reach their potential.
