Weather warning issued for county
A yellow weather warning has been issued for Nottinghamshire, with people warned of power cuts and damage to buildings.
The warning for rain comes into effect from 5pm on Thursday, September 26 and will be in force until Friday, September 27.
Met Office maps show the warning covers vast areas of Nottinghamshire, including parts of Ashfield.
A spokesperson said: “Heavy rain will bring the potential for some flooding and disruption to transport.”
Talks continue amid Goose Fair strike plan
Negotiations are continuing amid potential tram strike actions which could affect this year’s Goose Fair.
The action is currently scheduled to take place between September 27 and October 6.
Tram operator NET remains in talks with the GMB union as a row over pay continues.
A spokesperson for NET said: “In the meantime, we’re busy working on contingency travel plans to cover the potential strike period, should it go ahead.”
Fireworks extravaganza location confirmed
Sutton Lawn will host Ashfield District Council’s fireworks extravaganza this year.
The event has been confirmed to take place on Saturday November 2.
More details are to be released in the coming days and weeks, but it has been confirmed the event will take place from 4-10pm.
Appeal for firefighter blitz families
Family and friends of firefighters who were killed during the 1940 “Christmas Blitz” in Manchester are being sought by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Six firefighters from Kirkby-in-Ashfield were sent to help following the bombings on December 23, 1940.
Out of a total of eight voluntary firefighters who were sent, three died and another three were seriously injured.
The firefighters were:
• Ralph Burrows - Ralph was a bus driver and left his wife and two young children to go to Manchester. Ralph died at the scene in Piccadilly, Manchester.
• Alan Richard Day - Alan was a painter and decorator by trade. He died of his wounds in Robey Street Infirmary, Manchester.
• Joseph Henry Wright - Like Alan, Joseph was also a painter and decorator. He died at the scene in Piccadilly, Manchester.
• Ronald Lowe and William Makinson - Both Ronald and William were seriously injured, and were treated at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
• George Best - For reasons the service is unsure of, George was transported to Mansfield General Hospital for his treatment.
If you know any of the individuals listed above, then please get in touch by emailing corporatecomms@notts-fire.gov.uk.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service also has the addresses and ages of each individual at the time, which we can use to confirm their identity with those who come forward.
Healthcare workers recognised with awards
The work and dedication of Sherwood Forest Hospitals staff and partners has been recognised at the trust’s 2024 Excellence Awards ceremony.
More than 500 nominations were received for this year’s awards, which celebrated those in clinical and non-clinical roles across the trust’s King’s Mill, Newark, and Mansfield Community hospital sites.
A total of 20 awards were handed out during the event at the John Fretwell Sporting Complex, near Mansfield, on September 12.
The big award of the evening was the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is reserved for those who have made significant career and lifetime contributions to the trust.
Dr Elizabeth Carlin, Service Director for Sexual Health, was the winner.
A longstanding supporter of the Trust, Elizabeth was appointed Service Director for Sexual Health in 2012 and has since led a successful bid for SFH (alongside NUH) to provide high-quality sexual health services for the whole of Nottinghamshire.
She was commended for her passion for the Sexual Health services at SFH, in which she has invested so much of her working life – spending most of her career improving the quality of the Sexual Health services for our local population.
Dr Carlin said: “I am absolutely overwhelmed – I really didn’t expect it. It’s been an absolute privilege to do this job for so many years and I’d like to acknowledge the fabulous team around me.”
